Various letters have been received from MPs and Ministers relating to Segway PT acceptance in the UK and in Europe. The following is a collection of such letters.
- Letters/emails from Chelgate (Segway's PR company in the UK, formerly WEBER Shandwick) to Frances Evans, Technology Transport Division at the Department for Transport. 30-Sep-2008. This particular series of communications is interesting as it contains a specific "blow-by-blow" response from Segway INC to some of the DfTs ill-conceived comments in response to reviewing the independent studies. - Email to Frances Evans from the Police Federation. A position statement on the value of Segway PTs to police forces in the UK. FOI: 1/6 - pages 31-32. 25-Sep-2008. Mainly negative with regards to recognising the potential of Segway PTs.
- Thorough "Segway UK briefing paper", covering the UK government's position, an overview of the campaign to encourage trials to begin using Segway PTs, as well as environmental credentials and the international regulatory position. FOI: 2/6 - pages 3-9. 26-Aug-2008.
- Letter to the DfT from the Association of Chief Police Officers of England, Wales and Northern Ireland,13-Aug-2008. Letter explains guidance will be issued to all police forces that Segway PTs will be treated as motorcycles and must be used and registered as such. Likened them to mini-motos and complained that their silent operation would be a danger to pedestrians. FOI: 2/6 - pages 11 & 12.
- Email from the Federation of European Pedestrians Associations (FEPA) to the DfT in relation to their considerable apprehension about Segway PTs being able to be used on footways ("Given the speed at which SEGWAYs can go"). 14-Jul-2006. FOI: 6/6 - page 29.
- Example of letters sent directly from Segway LLC to key members of the DfT. Includes an early Segway briefing paper and details of Segway LLC's aim to develop a UK coalition of support from Parliamentarians et al to lobby Ministers. FOI: 6/6 - pages 1-5. 23-Aug-2005

Confirmation from Jim Fitzpatrick MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State, that the police should not prosecute PT users if they are not putting the public at risk. 2008.

Letter from Luciano Caveri, Chairman, Committee on Regional Policy, Transport and Tourism of the European Parliament, encouraging all EU member states to authorise the use of PTs on pavements. 2003.
- The EC position on the application of Directive 92_61_EEC to the Segway HT (PDF)
Letter from Per-Ove Engelbrecht at the European Commission, confirmation the PT is not to be classified as a road vehicle. 2002.
