It works in well other countries ans all experience shows that there are no problems, so why not in this country? legalise now if your really green sign thid petition I went on a Segway in New Zealand. After 10 mins. practice I was away.GREAT FUN!!(I'm 59) It mast be made legal to use in UK ,the sooner the better. I must have one!! I have seen the segway in use in other countries for city tours and think this would be great for tourism in England too. Also a great and green way to get around. Just had some amazing fun in Rome on one of these for 3 hours, best "green" way to see the city!! Completely safe and should be legalised in the UK.. Totally agree they should be street legal in UK.
My Wife and I have recently had the pleasure in using one of these machines
I am disabled with generalised dystonia and need one of these to get around. It is illegal and I can't walk what should I do. Why should I get a wheelchair when I can use one of these. Please.. We really need to take ositive action to reduce congestion in our towns and cities.Safety is a concern, but like the induction of the cylce and car into modern society, boundaries and rules are set to reduce the risk AS LOW AS PRACTICALY POSSIBLE. Bring on the Segway. Short distance commuting will be transformed. I have Parkinsons and desparately want to increaSE MY MOBILITY FOR SHORT JORNEYS SUCH AS VISITING THE LOCAL SHOPS, AND THE dOCTOR'S SURGERY hi I suffer with my feet and i have a problem with my knee,so i was thinking about transport on short journeys electric buggy scoter or segway tried them both and only one winner the segway it is fantastic you can turn them on a sixpence and there safe as houses so please legalise them regards brad This is one of the most enjoyable and relaxing methods of travelling around busy towns and cities, whilst also being inexpensive, environmentally friendly and people friendly. How can anyone find any reason for not allowing the use of these segways. Even from a safety standpoint I beleive that a push bike would do someone more damage in a collision than one of these, and as for speed I can get a much higher speed on my bike than on one of these, where the speed proportionally increases the level of impact damage. I am registered disabled due to breathing probems and wish to buy a segway as an alternative of an unhip mobility scooter so I can go out walking in the new forest and along the beach front with my family. I think it is crazy these are not legal for streey use here. The states are the most ligatious nation in the world yet they allowed this form of help with mobilty.
I want the right to own and operate a Segway and actually be able to use it. this is an answer to many problems we face for transportation.
This country (UK) has lost touch with society & the Prime Minister should do what it can immediately to change the outdated law to legalise the use of these just like cycling. There is a need to ease congestion where ever & however possible. As a keen cyclist I was intrigued to have a go on a Segway as a means of sustainable transport for short journeys. I finally had that opportunity this weekend and was incredibly impressed. Excellent for those with balance and other disabilities allowing people access to all areas normally access by the walking public. In London we already have to share our bike path system with motorcycles, taxis and buses - Segways seem a much safer option. Segways are great fun and should be legalised they are no more dangerous than mobility scooters and they are everywhere These are a fantastic, cheap and environmentally friendly alternative and make so much sense. why can these not be allowed on our streets The government want to cut down pollution and encourage a carbon footprint conscious culture so why can't they see the huge benefits of SEGWAY??? Wakey Wakey!!!! As a disabled ex-military officer the Segway proved to be a huge bonus in personal transportation around Madrid. Let's allow them in UK Stupid legislation gets in the way of a lot of good ideas in this country. It's about time those in charge opened their eyes to sensible solutions for traffic chaos. Alternative low-impact transportation should be encouraged. The Segway Personal Transporter is just such an alternative. Change the law. Give it the same status as a bicycle. Its a travisty that the Segway is illegal on uk roads! Segways are a brilliant idea, and a fantastic mode of transport. There so much quieter then small motor transport, and they are much safer to. modern technologly shouldnt be banned :D I want a Segway Centaur (which I also consider to be an ideal on-the-road vehicle for the disabled). Please legalise it! Clean transportation why is not legal? The law is out of date. Why on Earth are these not legal! Surely this will help towards the climate change targets??? so many business opportunities I treied a Segwayin Paris last week and found it to be a very easy to use and safe mode of transport both on the pavement and on the road. At no point did pedestrians or motorists object to their use. I am looking on the internet with the view of purchasing one to assist my daily commute and allow me to leave the car at home yet have found out they are illegal on roads in the UK. Would be great if this could be reviewed as I feel would greatly assist with rush hour and pollution if they took off. Why are we the only country in the World that makes this green transport illegal. Of course they should be legal. Other countries have them and we just stick our heads in the sand. In these days of energy efficency it seems strange that these eco friendly segways are banned from the roads it is very short sighted of the government. Lets put some fun into saving the planet.... The government should welcome this form of transport with open arms to drive down traffic congestion in towns and cities. The government should also introduce a similar scheme to the car scrapage deal so you can trade in your car for one of these.
Segways are awesome and its stupid that they are illegal in the UK Surely this is on the same parameter as an electrically motorised bicycle, or the sinclair C5 type of machine - yet it is far more visible and less intrusive than either. How can there be objections on this basis? Unbelievable how this so called progressive government is still unable to legalise this mode of transport. My wife is unable to walk and is registered disabled. She currently uses a wheelchair but as her condition prevents her legs bending a Segway would be an ideal local transport solution. OK so No 11 won't cream a fortune in fuel duty from it but for once let common sense prevail! With global warming such anissue surely this just makes so much sense? why is it that other european counties have sorted this out already ,recently visited Brugge in Belgium where we used segways on a tour of the city sights , these machines are fully legal there they can go anywhere a person can we found them safe reliable and fun to use.
This is definately the way forward for easy simple economic environmentally friendly local transport. Having used segways several times in different cities around the world, I truly believe that these personal transporters could effectively contribute to reducing climate change. Legalise Segways. they do no harm to the enviroment. If MP's are worried, put a minimum age law in place so children can't operate them. hope they legalise it soon I want one to get to work on! Having riden one in the US and had no problems negotiating city pavements i dont see why it woul be a problem over here. I used a Segway in Washington DC for a 3 hour tour and it was great fun. We were able to cover a distance not possible by foot in that time and I was amazed at how they were so accepted by road users and pedestrians alike. We were taught a users code, not disimilar to that of bike riders for cycle paths, etc. No one we passed objected and many approached us to enquire about them. I can see no reason for not allowing them on the public highways of the UK. They are more manouverable than a bike, stop easier than a bike and are far more stable at slow speeds. Where I live in the South is an area of mass retirement. There are a lot of invalid carriages on our roads and pavements that travel anywhere at will, but are clearly not very manouverable, with large turning circles, are very heavy and have poor visibility (too low down). The consequence is that they present dangers to those on the public highway and to the users but these are allowed and Segways are not! This is clearly inconsistent and the law needs reviewing. Please... this is the only first world country that segways is not legalize. This is not acceptable for a country with international expose such as UK. Please legalize segways, let us contribute for a better and ecologic world. Segway is safe and environment frendly. I use one for more than 4 years. if three wheel electric buggy's are legal and they have the same braking system why not segways. I am astonished to find that this is actually illigal! It makes no sense. I have just spent three hours riding a Segway around Prague. no one was killed or injured in the making of this trip, I cannot believe the UK government is serious about carbon emission reductions but Segways are not a legal form of transport in the UK.
I do not have a Segway, however I would like to have the opportunity to have one if I wished. At the present I don't find it worth it if I can't use in public. I have problems with walking due to 2 replacement hips. The Segway would be an absolute boon to people like myself. It is nonsense that this simple and effective transport system is not more generally available and fully legalised. It's cleaner than cars and buses, safer than bicycles and a great contribution to green travel. Get on with it! I agree Segways should be legal fit them with horn and possible lights as well come on Mr Brown!! Given the availability of electric bicycles and vehicles such as the G-wiz, it is clear to me that the British Government is finally becoming serious about environmental travel and transport solutions. However, its seems absolutely bizzare that unlike many of our EU counterparts, the UK has banned the Segway, a simple to use, safe and functional electronic vehicle. My support of this petition is unconditional and I fully endorse its aims and intentions. Segways or similar single user electric vehicles should be road legal and subject to the same regulations as powered pedal cycles. Recently took a segway tour of Bruges, it took 5 minutes to master and then we were away. It's a fantastic, clean, safe, convenient mode of transport. Can't think of any negatives. Let's improve our lives and get them legalised quickly! Great way to travel and good for the enviroment Vote for Segways in the UK Segways should be allowed in the UK as they are in the US I find it astounding that our government, whilst claiming to be green and pretending to want to support solutions that eliminate dependence on fossil fuels and automobiles, would want to ban this major innovation in transport. Clearly, New labour does not believe their own propoganda on Global Warming. This is a very safe, incredibly 'green' form of personal transport. Exactly what you would hope the UK government would be excited to learn about and promote. Given it's performance and safety testing, and ensuing acceptance in European countries, it seems extremely odd that, many years after it was first produced, the Segway is still not a legal form of transport within the UK. I used a Segway PT in the USA and found it to be perfectly safe and sensible, even in traffic. It is silly that they have no proper legal status in the UK. head in sand springs to mind.... At the moment I ride an electric trike. It's big and has no way of reversing on it as back peddling acts as a second brake if needed.
They are legal in Austria, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Portugal and are tolerated in Spain (where we rode Segways around the historic city of Cartegena) and the Netherlands. Also, following a very positive independent study carried out in Germany, Segway PTs may soon be legal there, too so why not here in the UK? I have used a Segway on the streets of Rome where the driving can be somewhat challenging. I felt completely safe as I could be easily seen by other drivers. This unique form of transportation will change the people of britain. not only will it reduce the countries carbon footprint in the world, but they can also be used by police instead of vehicles. Having experianced this form of transport in Paris over the last weekend, I wanted to purchase one for my wife as an alternative to using the car for short journeys and was horrified to find it was illegal to use in public in this country. A model steam engine as big or bigger than a Segway can be driven in public provided it carries public liability insurance. Segways should be allowed in the same way. I work as a segway racing instructor on the Yarmouth seafront, these machine's are absolutely fantastic and would personally love one myself. The rest of Europe are getting the benefit of this pollution-free product. Why not the UK? We are suposed to be in Europe I do not agree with a lot of European legislation but on this subject I think we should conform, they should be legal in all of Europe. Please legalise these great devices - they would be an absolute godsend to my dad who is crippled by arthritis but still too proud to use a wheelchair. Having seen these transport devices in the US and Europe I see no reason why their status in the UK is still not clear. Having used a Segway PT in the US very successfully both on public sidewalks and roads and seen how a number of agencies are making use of them ie. wihtin US airport policing, I fail to see why this country continues to lag behind. I myself would make use of a Segway for personal commuting to work if it was legally possible. Having rented Segways in California (Monterey), I can see no reason why they should be banned from use in UK. Particularly since we permit electric powered pedal cycles. Both have two wheels, handlebars and electric motors. So, what's the difference legally? I believe segways should be allowed on roads and footpaths and are an environmentally friendly alternative to cars I recently had my first experience of using a segway in New Zealand. It is a very simple and safe mode of transport and I find it quite astonishing that they are not legal in the UK I mean, come on, you want Green Transport, have this. Having ridden a segway it was so much fun but also if i could use one legally in my local area it would mean that i would be able to pop to my local shops - something i currently avoid as parking is a nightmare - a segway would encourge support for local small shops and help the enviroment - MAKE THEM LEGAL!!! PLEASE!!! Went on a Segway tour around Budapest - very much needed for London to get rid of the smelly tour buses! Please legalise segways as personalised transportation. There's no reason why they shouldn't be. I have just spent three hours riding a Segway around Prague. no one was killed or injured in the making of this trip, I cannot believe the UK government is serious about carbon emission reductions but Segways are not a legal form of transport in the UK.
I want to use one as a disability transporter The segway will be a much more environmentally friendly choice of transport and fun. I bought my Segway on ebay.co.uk from a guy in Brighton, but fortunately I live in Brno in the Czech Republic and here it is a great way to get to work in the Summer The Segway would offer a green, economical, convenient solution to my current commuting problems - in a country where I regularly see cyclists risking their lives, and others in traffic which ignores them how can the segway not be a viable alternative? Lights, a helmet and a standard code of conduct, and the segway would be safer than a cycle. It is totally backward of the UK not to be encouraging sensible, low carbon alternative forms of transport such as the Segway. I'd buy one and use my car less.
I beleive that Segways are safe to use in appropriate public places, and it should be legal to do so. Come on you nanny state government there is no reason segways should not be legalised in the UK other than the fact that Nanny knows best. Wake up! In a world where our dependence on oil is proven to cause a detrimental effect on our planet, it seems ludicrous that we cannot use a green personal tranport "vehicle" in this country. THe sooner that their use is legalised the better. Will save on transport costs reduce congestion and parking problems. An excellent mode of personal transport, I would buy one now if they werte street/road legal. Please amend the law to make Segway riding in the UK legal The sooner this is made legal the better for the environment! Used responsibly, a Segway is an ideal way to get around without firing up the car, and without enduring the sweat-inducing dangers of riding a pushbike!
Why isnt the segway legal?
I would like to see the Segway legally used on all pedestrian areas. Not on the road. I feel that the lack of legality of Segways in the UK is not only illogical, bit discrimates against those with disabilities. I have MS, can stand ok but find walking difficult so this would be perfect for me I saw Mall Cop today and these bad boys should defo not be illegal they rule!!!!!!
I moved over three months ago from florida and there i could roam down the lovly beach paths on my segway now i realise that there are no lovly beach paths in manchester but i still wish i could ride my segway to school. Can we please drop the nanny state attitude and allow adults to make their own choices ! I have a friend with a debilitating illness who could really benefit from thismethod of transport-if motability scooters are allowed so should segways. Having ridden a Segway a really do believe that these machines are one of the main answers to our environmental problems. Other countries use them - police in other countries use them. Why is the UK so far behind? If these environmentally friendly devices are legalised and made much cheaper then more people will buy them and be less reliant onfossil fuel. i did not actually realise that the segway was not legal in the uk. I have the lung disease COPD which means I unable to walk more than 50m without becoming breathless. In other respects I am perfectly normal.I am interested in a Segway for mobility purposes both around town and on pathways in parks and on nature trails. A change in the law to permit its use would be a great boon to me. I think it would be prudent to limit the speed on pavements to 4mph in consideration to the safety of pedestrians. I've ridden them in Brussels and Berlin . Obama rides them I've seen them in Prague . Surely we will become a laughing stock if they are not allowed here because of pettifogging interpretations of vehicle safety regulations by people who have no idea about these marvelous machines . What about inline rollerskates ,they will do 12mph with no brakes ,lights ,horns etc.yet they are allowed . I can barely walk and will have to accept a wheelchair unless Segway's become legal. They would take up a lot less room in a store, especially in Great Britain renowned for tiny stores. A Segway would allow me to go in the woods and footpaths, as well as shopping etc. PLEASE legalise them for both public and offroad use. Let's face it. Our UK government are a greedy bunch who steal and lie. We donate large sums of our hard earned in TAX!
There is no good reason for the Government not to legalise the Segway immediately. I have used one of these and they are brilliant. Why take a car out for a short journey if you can use an environmentally friendly alternative. It's really daft that Segways are not permitted for use on either UK roads or Pavements. My husband and I went on a Segway last week in Kos, Greece. We went on holiday to Turkey and got boat from Bodrum to Kos for the day. When we arrived a man went past us on a Segway handing out tourist information and advertising Segway tours so we went and found the shop and got a 50 minute tour for 10 Euros - (fantastic price). We had so much fun and it was so easy to use even for a complete beginner. I'd love to use one here in the UK. It was the highlight of our holiday. A motor cycle accident, in which I broke right legs and left knee and increasingly affected by Arthritis I find it difficult to walk even short distances. And now use my car for most journeys, even those less than one mile. With local shop on roads with increasing parking restriction, the Segway would be one of the best option available to many in a similar situation. If four wheeled buggies can be use on the Highway and public footpath by OAP's and disabled persons then why not two wheeled a Segway. And, you can have the added security of being able to take the Segway in to you probity and off the street. It will help the elderly to feel young again.
segways are just a different method of transport to bikes so they are just as easy and versatile. we should be able to use these on the streets and roads without having to add lights indicators etc... Having used the Segway for the first time last week, they are a sensible economical and ecological method of transport in urban and rural areas for which legislation change is urgently required to allow their general use. I believe that allowing Segway usage on public footpaths etc. will present no more danger to the public at large than electric scooters for the disabled. Why is the Uk always behind everyone else in so many matters? We used to lead rather than follow the world. It would be great if Segways were legalised so that people had a choice about alternative green transport. Following a racing car accident I had to have emergency cerebal spinal surgery to stop me becoming paraplegic. I can now just about walk at less that 1 mile per hour. The 'segway' would be an ideal form of transport for my evevyday use i had the chance to use a segway today. they are safe units and would in somecases decrease road traffic for short journeys that are too far to walk. ti would be the perfect solution for people like me who commute by train to work, but live too far from the station and therefore need to drive. In a congested city like London, transport options such as the Segway should be encouraged! at present i drive a nissan x-trail to work 3.5 miles and would love to leave it at home but due to me being disabled i cannot walk to far so a segway would be good for me and the envirment, also my wife likes to walk well this would be good as i could go out with her ,she does not go out as she does not want to walk alone .
i would like to see the segway Legal in the uk road and by ways This device would help many people with mobility difficulties (particularly younger people) to have a better quality of life. Having just returned from NZ where Segway are legal and having experienced the versatility of this device I cannot see why it is not legal in the UK.
Anything that takes petrol driven vehicles off of the roads must be a good thing. It seems to me that the Segway is ideal for the short trips that most of us take. LEGALISE IT. This is an environmental/user-friendly mode of personal transport which can open so many usage opportunities in this country.
Segway is one of the key ways we can help improve our personal transport issues in a clean, safe & economically viable way. Yet again the UK goes over the top with legislation. Any other European country deals with things sensibly but not us I have recently tried a Segway for the first time and think they are absolutely superb. It was extremly stable and not once did I feel insecure.
Goverment wants green, zero emmissions is green! I really can't believe the Segway PT isn't legal to use in the UK on public paths, cycle lanes. It is safe, easy to use and so environmentally friendly. Ideal to use in the city to reduce congestion. The PT Segway should be legalised for use on the UK roads. It is safe, clean and would get folk out of their cars, and it is great safe fun. I speak from personal experience. Even if a dispensation is made where these vehicles have to use cycle lanes - it is ridiculous that a low carbon urban commuter vehicle is currently not able to be used in the UK. The Segway is a great way to travel. Why they're not legal in the UK is beyond me. Seems we need some form of court judgement in favour of classing them as a carriage so that they can be used in much the same way as a bicycle. The question of safety keeps coming up. If elderly people are allowed to use scooters, that are larger and often difficult to control, why can't a person in good physical shape use a segway? I have often walked down a street or been in a shop and been driven down by a person on a scooter. You would not get this with a segway. Segways are really easy to use and do not take up a lot of space. If the law changed to allow them on public paths, sidewalks, roads and allowed into shops (just like a mobility scooter) then I would get a segway. i need one as sitting is almost impossible. Segways would be a fantastic addition to the UK, cutting down on pollution is definately a step in the right direction. :) Have thought exactly the above for some time we are almost forced to use cars with our sub standard public transport. This would be a great option even if for only 7/8 months of the year. Looks great for invalids and others,if it can be legalised for public highway use in UK. I am a recent convert to gliding on a Segway. The fact that they are not legal in the Uk for use on the roads, cycle lanes or pathways is beyond belief. I found them safe, easy to use, green for the environment, quiet, good for the planet - need I go on. My belief is that yet again parliament when faced with something outside the 'ordinary' just closes down and refuses to consider usage.
This is the perfect environmentally friendly commuting machine. It's terrible that archaic bureaucracy stops sane progress. it is legal to use a mobility scooter, why not a segway scooter. i believe this is a safe, fun mode of transport that is also eco-friendly. I went on one of these today in the centre of Nice - France, and it was not at all dangerous. People can see you coming and they move out of the way, and if they don't, it is really easy for you to move out of their way, or slow down. It is definitely safer than a bike, because they aren't as fast as a bike, and it is very difficult to fall off them. Not to mention that it is a hell of a lot of fun!!!
I am lucky enough to have had the pleasure of 'Riding' on a segway whilst on holidays in Florida,USA.It is an amazing vehicle to get around on,simple, safe, and so much cleaner than a conventional mode of transport.I can see no reason for it being illegal to use on British Roads and pavements. How good would it be if people in the UK, instead of being offered £2000 to scrap their old cars in favour of buying a new one were instead given an incentive to purchase a segway? I for one would love to own one and use it to go to the shop and not use the car.Perhaps the government are worried about the revenue they could lose from car tax, fuel duty E.T.C. I've tried the Segway in the US. It can be ridden with only minutes of tuition, and we went on a countryside tour lasting 2 hours - it would have been totally impractical any other way. What great fun! If we could get only a small percentage of the current 1-occupant cars converted to riding Segways, it would solve congestion problems! GET ON WITH IT! Why are we the most legislated country in the world? I am 68 and together myself and a friend enjoyed two hours on Segways in Brussels , the Home of the EEC at the height of the holiday with no problems. We negotiated crowded pedestrian areas street markets and roads without any problems after about 30 minutes training . We were not arrested although many policemen saw us . I used a Segway in Singapore today and would love to use one on the roads in UK . I feel they are safe and are definitely very GREEN After seeing how effectively these machines are used in the United States as a clean, cheap and carbon friendly commuter and leisure option, I am outrages that there is currently no niche by which the Segway can be legally used by UK residents. Any government seeking to endorse green alternatives in a modern age cannot expect their credentials to be seriously until they begin endorsing sensible and practical alternatives like the Segway; an avenue by which these devices to be used on the UK's public highways, footpaths or cycle lanes must be provided; any combination of the above must be considered as a vital first step. Took a tour through Rome on one, an incredible expierience. There is no way i could have seen all that i did by walking and who wants to just drive past. i was able to stop and look around then carry on to the next place, never getting to tired, truly awesome!!!! Segways are a great way of travelling short distances. Please consider legalising them. They would most certainly be a menace on the pavement, as mobility scooters are, so perhaps the cyclepath networks should be expanded and made for Segway use too. I'm 38 yrs old and have M.S. I'm not ready for a wheelchair but have to struggle round town with two walking sticks because my legs won't carry me very far these days. Segway could change my life by giving me the opportunity to go Christmas shopping or walk with my husband - neither of which I've been able to do for last six years! Segways are a terrific alternative to cars and we should make it as easy as possilbe to let people give them a try. I find it astonishingly incomprehensible given our need to reduce our dependency upon the car that Segways are not treated as bicycles. To continue to deny the use of Segways on the public highway in exactly the same way as an electric bicycle simply defies logic! I think Segways should be legalised because they have the potential to make a significant contribution to non automotive mobility which will not be achieved by other means including bicycles (of which I am a fan) so saving congestion, polution & greenhouse gasses. No public transport. and no pavements where we live and would like a more green alternative to our cars. Quite hilly wher we live so bikes hard work. No public & quite hilly so bikes hard work why are electrid bikes legal & segways not? I haveused these machines in America when i was unable to walk too far and found them extreemly useful. It did not bother other people who just accepted them as they appreciated that they were of great help to me and very environmetally friendly. The local police also used them. Why not??? Why shouldn't we try every single possible form of alternative transportation which promises to reduce emissions and oil consumption. This is amazing technology, the perfect answer for those who have mild mobility or respiratory issues, and for any average commuter who doesn't want to arrive at the office in a sweat. I commute on a Segway and bike on the weekends - a perfect combination! Besides, about 12 of them fit in the footprint of a car - think about the effect that would have on roads - and at the other end, you take it inside with you. Give Segways a chance! Everyone should be allowed the freedom of choice when the outcome is environmentally supportive. Great idea for those of us with health/ handicaps which resrtict mobility.
Come on Britain. Wake up! I have a bad back and difficult to walk more than 50 met. Lets move with the times!! Why not allow something instead of always trying to ban things, it's fun and funky. Why not ? Let's get away from the "Man with a Red Flag mentality" just for once. No wonder the UK's going "down the pan" What a tedious country this has become ! With the need to get cars off the road, what possible reason could there be to not legalising Segways. A person riding a bicycle can travel as fast as a Segway so I don't see any reason why they should not be allowed on the road. They are no worse than mobility scooters which help people to get around. They're a great idea. If we all had to travel more slowly perhaps we'd all be a bit more patient. I would love to have a Segway in the UK Have ridden Segways in USA. Superb green machines, safe and easy to ride. They are no more dangerous to pedestrians than mobility scooters and are much more manoeuvrable. They have such huge potential if taken seriously. makes total sense, listen to the people. used one in yarmouth on a track and now want one Seen in Bangkok and fascinated ever since After having a go on one I can see its advantages.
I am 24 and I would like to buy one to commute to work in central london, its a great idea but I am not legally aloud to use them on the pavements or roads which is a great shame. Of course we should be able to use Segways on the pavement and on cycleways - those battery powered disabled scooters can, so why not any other speed-limited, battery powered, ride-on device? I believe this machine will be very useful for people who are unable to walk long distances and live in towns with poor transport systems. I am currently facing this problem. Please tell the authorities to legalise it. Thank you. Thay look graet and if they were allowed I'm sure the price would come down so go make them legal and I along with others will get one i want one for work they are the wheels of the future They should definitely be legalised - they're such a revolutionary machine, they have the ability to transform the streets of London, as I'm quite sure that if legalised for use on London roads, then many more people would invest in one. At a mere 6p per charge, the Segway would slowly repay itself. That's equivalent to 1000 mpg! It's amazing. They're also an absolute joy to ride! in the interest of the enviroment this product should be legal to use in the uk This mode of transport is safer than most disabled electic transport systems and should be made legal in the uk. I have ridden a Segway in the US and, suitably impressed, had decided to buy one to use as an ideal local transport vehicle here in the UK. I teach T'ai Chi to both fit people and those with disabilities, and the driving position is ideal to enable a posture that enhances the benefits of my practice and teaching, and is also conducive to my own arthritic spinal condition. To my horror I find that the totally short-sighted and over-reactive legislative system in the UK considers them too dangerous for use here. I can legally buy and run a mobility scooter on pavement and road without any form of formal licensing or being registered disabled or, if my back would allow it, I could resurrect my bicycle (competitive use of which, in my younger years, is the root cause of my current medical problems) and become one of the unfortunately increasing percentage of unsafe cyclists who weave around our streets. Let us see sense and legislate for controlled usage of Segways in public places. Segways are the future of personal transport. Width-wise they take up no more space than the average person, they are efficient, easy and environmentally friendly ways of transport. Ridiculous these are not permitted on uk pavements. Not listening and hand wringing h&s zealots will be the downfall of this country. If a bike can have electric assistance to a maximum of 15mph in the UK, then surely a Segway should be able legalised. it is indefensible that Segways are not allowed on our highways - how backward are we? - they are very ecofriendly and very easy to use Its shamefull the segway was a great invention and what problems will it course. It does more help then damage its dissgracful that it is illegal. I hope this petition is able to legalise it bececuase theres no good reson for it being bad like eletric karts for OAP`s Why would the governent have laws to prevent people from having wht they want, with a small risk to the public; but not spend there time sorting out the real issues, such as murder. Its about time we updated the highway act of 1835. Please legalize use of the Segway in the UK as an economical and environmentally friendly mode of transport. being disabled this would give the freedom to be more independent and enjoy at least where cycles are a permited to go. they are no bigger than most pushchairs used on our pavements these days. I have seen these used around the streets of Paris. They are excellent, what as shame London and other towns in the UK can't benefit from fume free transport. The segway will help decrease the number of cars on the road in the UK. It is totally green and could be used on existing cycle paths, which need to be increased further. This the obvious and common sense solution to lower greenhouse emissions. PLEASE LEGALISE THE SEGWAY!!! Cambridge has a fantastic network of cycle paths which would be perfect for a Segway. Please legalise it soon. Like many disabled persons I think this is a wonderful mode of transport for all. Keeping pollution down, and with the higher cost of fuel, both to the planet and the pocket, these machines are the way forward. As a disabled younger person, this would be ideal coz I cannot walk far and then I can be on same level as other pedestrians. Due to the inflated cost of fuel, Segways should be made path legal. Segways would be a boon for the disabled being unable to walk long distances i feel a sedgway would be an ideal solution Segway is a great product and should be available for use on public highways. It is absurd that a child can ust a scooter on a road but the Segway is unlawful. If the Government want to get people out of their cars and use alternative modes of transport, this is a perfectly viable and safe alternative. This would be such a godsent to someone who is slightly disabled (ie had a mild storke for example) where they would not be able to walk easily or far, but who, on a segway, could move rapidly, safely and so much more independently.
I cycle to work at the moment, but as I get older this may not be an option, however the Segway would be an ideal alternative. It one of the solutions that can make a difference and right now not hpoefully one day in the future. They are even used by police in the United States
these are sick, why would they not make them legal in uk the segway would be an ideal mode of transport for me, especially as I'm disabled and don't want to use a four wheeled buggy. FOR A COUNTRY WANTING TO REDUCE ITS CARBON FOOTPRINT THESE SHOULD BE MADE LEGAL. I WOULD DEFINITELY CONSIDER PURCHASING ONE TO COMMUTE. Here at Clear, the carbon offset company (www.clear-offset.com) we have measured the carbon footprint of the Segway i2 at 16.6 g/km. The compare very favourably with the DfT official figures for the Tube (52.6 g/km), National Rail (60.2 g/km), Bus (94.3 g/km) or even the average Car (~200 g/km).
I see this form of transport as ideal for all ages , affording solo transport with minimal pollution. I myself am an "OAP" and I see this as an alternative form of " powered chair" without the dangerous aspects of 75 kg four wheeled invalid chair weaving through pavements with the driver's eyes at waist level Why is people having something that they can use to get around easily so bad? ANY form of alternative transport should get a "quick" decision made by government to allow it to be legally used. Its the bureaucracy behind this government that is stopping us from moving forward. I want to use on Welsh Hill farm as replacement for Quad. This requires some road use -- the same as for agri tractor. goverment should wake up its got to happen i dont see what this is not legal if you can ride a cycle and roller blade. If we legalize segways then the environment will benfit and so will conjestion. With a minimum of user-training, Segways are safe and good for the environment. Please allow Segways as an alternative to smog-and-traffic- causing-automobiles? Segways are battery powered. They charge from wall sockets. Zero emissions. Surely that's reason enough? It's about time this government did something sensible.
segway are awesome The Segway is the transport of the future and I cannot understand why it is not legal for the roads of the UK. It looks like amazing fun and very functional, I can't wait to get one. I want to be able to use a Segway in the UK Segways are amazing Using a Segway would cut my driving down by over 50% Segway is the best clean way to move around. let's legalize it for a clean air i have restricted mobility due to Parkinson's. I recently had a trial on the Segway personal travel machine and found it very easy to use, and I would like to have one in the UK to reduce my dependence on cars. I have Parkinson's and have tried out the Sedgway in USA and it would helpmy mobility enormously if I could use one here. my current journey to work take 1 hour and 20 minutes. This is all in rush hour congested traffic. this is perfect for me if i could use a segway as all the roads have pavements I tried them in the USA and they were easy to master and great for getting around quickly and safely. I was very disappointed to find that they were banned in the UK.
In todays environmentally conscious world why oh why cannot we embrace a green alternative.Instead we choose to be stiff and blind to the long term benefits.
They are a brilliant and innovative form of transport, and as the world speeds up we need to progress with it. This is a fast, easy and green way of transportation and saves on short car journeys (which are not eco friendly) as well as making our demanding lives move quicker as well as more fun! We have to get more cars off the road. This is a green mode of transport. Bad out-of-date laws, and complacent civil servants should not be allowed to block progress toward a greener plant. Allow us our wheels or we shall vote with our feet ! These are great and environmentally friendly, they should be legalised. They are no more dangerous than cyclists. Plus they are more environmentally friendly than scooters. I think the segway should be legalised as with motorised battery vechicles such as scooters that are not always used by disabled people but just a means of getting around. I think that the segway is a brilliant way to transport your self around the city saving fuel and emissions. We need to legalise this option in the U.K due to Global Warming getting worse because of the cars giving off gases, we need eco friendly transportation. If segways are allowed this will reduce the amount of people in cars and will help the environment. I rode a Segway for an hour yesterday and it is a wondrous machine. It took me 5 minutes to learn how to ride one and then, in Miami Beach, I could ride it anywhere a bicycle could go. I want to buy one but was horrified to learn that they're not legal to be used in UK. Please, please don't descriminate agains Segways! They have two wheels (like a bicycle) and an electric motor (like an electric bicycle), take up less space on road or pavement than a bicycle, and are much easier to use than a bicycle. Please afford them the same rights as a bicycle and make a positive contribution to taking cars off our roads. It is illiogicalfor this vehicle not\to be licensed for use in the uk with at least the samwe status as other electric bucyle type modes of transport. To discriminate against this novel and innovative mode of transpoirt is frankly luddite in the extreme.
If I had a Segway it would take 1 car off the road. What's the point in saying anything? This is the goverment we are talking too. used one in Rome on holiday and they are brilliant I have recently ridden a segway in Antigua, and found it to be perfectly safe and easy to ride. As a retired Police Officer, I feel that they should be allowed to be used on Certain roads in Britain, subject to tests for the rider. I have recently returned from Bermuda where Segways are an integral part of the transport and tourism infrastructure. Not just brilliant fun but a superb mode of transport. It would be perfect for my daily commute! As a Multiple Sclerosis (MS) sufferer I find it difficult to walk even short distances. While not in a wheelchair, yet, the prospect of being pushed around sitting in one is horrid. Segway provides a perfect solution for people with MS giving them mobility why allowing them to stay upright at level with others. Left alone it doesn't bear the stigma of a wheelchair. Segways have been used around the world by people with MS at various levels of disability. For my husband with MS Segways are simple to ride safely and are no more dangerous than riding a bike. They would be excellent for communting and are a much better solution than driving or the disasterous trams project in Edinburgh I used a Seghway in Texas and found it a great way of getting around. Ideal on cycle paths etc. allow segways in uk better for the enviroment!!! I am disabled, but able to walk short distances with the aid of a stick, the Segway would be wonderful to use as a Mobility device to improve the quality of my life as I do not wish to be seen in a Scooter like an old person or in a wheelchair, I have to keep "mechanical mobility" in my body (got to move regulally) The Segway would actually benifit me in many areas, aswell as get me out into society as at present i only go out once or twice a fortnight. Having recently tried one I can't understand why they are not legal in this country. They must be one of the cleanest moods or transport around.(unless, u smoke while riding ! :-) It is a nonsense that these devices are restricted. They would replace many cars that are currently used for short journeys. i live in bournmouth, segways would be so good for the promenade, gardens and town. the tourists would love it!! Why are electric vehicles for the disabled allowed on the pavement? Why are people always cycling on the pavement without being stopped? we need the segway in this country it's a great way to get around with so much traffic on the roads, other countries have them why can't we? GO SEGGERS! This whole situation is a classic example of common sense not being used. I'M EMIGRATING TO PARIS IF IT'S THE ONLY WAY I CAN SEGWAY! WE LOVE SEGWAYS AND WE WANT THEM NOW!!! Come on Nanny State give us some freedoms and get some cars off the road to boot!! Please legalise this environmentally friendly congestion-busting mode of transport! It is safer than bicycles, motorbikes or any other form of 'small' transport, and it takes up no more space on a pavement than the average walking human. It is incapable of travelling so fast as to be hazardous, unlike motorbikes and bikes. And it is truly a way you could beat much rush-hour congestion. Thanks for your attention. Bicycles are already using the pavements as the roads are unsafe. The Segway is less likely to injure you, even if you run into it. I fully support any initiative that improves the use of segway in the cities of all over Europe. Flexible, ecological and safety, and why not, funny!
PLs pls pls make segway legal, they are so kwl and just look out of this world!! If electric scooters are legal and they rush along the pavement at 8 mph, then why on earth can't the Segway be used. Ihave a respiratory condition and a segway pt or similar would free me from the hated wheelchair Unfortunately, it will probably require a "mass revolt" - people buying and taking to the streets in a caring, well behaved, adult manner and then falling foul of the law before Parliamnet will wake up and realise how crazy the situation this! I've just come back from the USA where the police are using Segways! In an environment where traffic is increasingly an issue in our major cities and coupled with ever rising fuel costs, Segway provides a clean, green solution to commuters and families everywhere. Whether it be a city commuter getting to work, or assisting someone who struggles to walk long distances walk their family dog, the segway is clearly the direction in which we should be heading and i urge the department for transport to legalise the use of these incredibly versatile machines on our roads. I'd love a Segway after trying oe at Goonhilly they are amazing and they way forward for personal transport so Why the hell does this country insist in being backwards like with everything else concerning the environment! Let us us Segways!!! It's time for the government to listen to the people not the other way round. This is a green and safe way to travel. Why the procrastination? In these days of high fuel costs and planet damaging emissions, it makes sense to look at alternate modes of planet friendly transport. Having used a Segway a few times now, i can confirm that they are safe and easy to use with hardly any environmental impact. The fact that the USA and the majority of Europe has already legalised the segway shows once again how far our archaic laws lag behind other countries. Come on UK, show some common sense and help to diminish our vehicular impact on our tiny island by legalising the Segway! The government is holding back peoples desire to use other more green forms on transport!! I thin tht Segway invent is very useful and it should be legalised as soon as it possible. I would like to be able to use a segway in the uk. I have a disability (CFS) that prevents me from being able to walk to far and I can't drive due to my eyesight not being quite good enough but I'm young and don't want to have to use a mobility scooter. I can't understand why I can't have a segway. I would be much safer on a segway that my 90 year old grandparents in their scooters!
the government are always saying about global warming, yet they wont allow segways which are much more environmentaly friendly to be used. I have trained many people to ride Segways and I have yet to meet someone that couldn't do it. A segway is the personal transporter of the future, it is here now, let us embrace the future. I know that the worlds resource of crude oil will run out in my lifetime, this has to be the way ahead, don't bring down the people that are showing us the way forward. LEGALISE SEGWAY. A great way to travel in these days of high priced petrol It seems the argument for keeping them banned, other than an archaic and outdated law, is that of safety. It seems to me that they are much safer than all the cyclists that arrogantly ignore no cycling signs and speed around our pavements endangering pedestrians on their inherently unstable vehicles. Ridiculous petty bureaucracy. This is the equivalent of a 3/4 wheeled electric powered buggy except that it uses only 2 wheels. There is no reasonable reason why in 2008 they cannot be used on the road.A 19th century Act of Parliament drafted to cope in a very different environment is not relevant to today's needs. These are completely environmentally friendly and safe and so seems ridiculous not to allow them as surely it will cut carbon emmissions It seems ridiculous that the Segway is illegal. Firstly from an environmental perspective it should be encouraged as an enjoyable alternative to a car. Secondly, if pedestrian safety is an issue we should ban bikes, which now seem to be be allowed to use pavements anyway. Alternativly,Segways could use the ever increasing number of cycle ways or even the road. I dont have a segway, but it makes sense to allow the use of these devices as described in the petition, especially with the governments 'so called' green stance.
Segways are the best mode of transport, they are environmentaly friendly, and economical, legalise segways!!!! Let's embrace the future, not hang behind. It is mad to keep up the ban! Having been on a Segway for the first time today, I found it to be safer, more easliy manoeverable and easier to control than a push bike. I think with sensible legislation these could help ease transport and environmental problems. as soon as the government figure out how to tax them like cars they will be perfectly lafe and legal i promise. As soon as they become legal I'm getting one. Hopefully not too long!! please legalise the segway for the u.k as I have a disabled brother that would benefit greatly from one of these highly manouverable machines and as has been demonstrated in europe this machines are a great help to law enforcrment officers where other forms of transport are useless Get way of getting around This is a must have product, safe, quick, clean... Please allow us to use it. I think they should be legal as so far statistically they havent been proven to be dangerous and they would indeed help the environtment and people who dont drive. Since they run on battery power and only really run at 12.5 mph tops they shouldn´t be a bother since their tilt system used for direction and speed is easily delt with for braking if used on a public footpath. Secondly these arent really different from the electric scooters used by OAPS. These run at top speed of 9mph which isnt much different to the 12.5 mph speed of the segways and yet they are allowed to be used freely thorughout the UK. Also officially since OAPs unfortunatly usually have a more limited reacting time and eyesight than some people, they are more of a hazard on the electric scooters due to it not being as a easy sudden braking. Took a tour of Munich on a Segway i2 and they are fantastic! They are road legal over there and perfectly safe. They should be treated like scooters! In fact I'm sure as you are standing up you would be easier to see! I would welcome any device that is easy to transport small footprint and allows excellent mobility to someone who may otherwise be confined to a bulky four wheel device that takes up the pavement and is not so flexible; and the rider doent 'feel' as though they are so incapacitated which a rider of a sit on 4 wheel buggy does
I am a disability professional and can see huge benefits from the Segway for increasing outdoor and indoor independence for people who can stand but cannot walk far. This is the civilised answer to mobility scooters for people who still want to have fun! As a serving Police Officer, my Force planned to trial the Segway in a City Centre pedestrian environment. This would allow the force to have an increased presence within the area and to utilise greener technology, however as this is still classed as a vehicle on a road this plan had to be halted.
Time to cast off out dated restrictions and embrace the modern technological realities. Having used a Segway in the streets of Rome, I cannot see a viable argument for the continued ban on their use in the UK. We are able to use electric bicycles, electric scooters, invalid carriages etc., so why not this safe, environmentally friendly mode of transport too? I have been to Poland and visited Krakow, Wroclaw and Warsaw where Segways are used in city centres and main squares, in crowded conditions, with no problems. I hope open usage of Segways are allowed in the U.K. It will allow me to utilize the mobility aid of my choice, necessary due to disability, on my next trip. How can somethingn like this not be legal to ride on the public roads, footpaths or cycle paths, but yet we can have muppets causing all sorts of problems on cycles. I don't understand it energy efficiant, would get cars off the road (so safer) fits with all greener policies the government should be pushing for, and looks fun to use. There really doesn't seem to be a problem. Has anyone actually given any kind of reasonable reason as to why this has not happened yet? I was recently in Dubai and why is it they can be used legally in a country with vast oil supplies and not in the UK? This is the perfect way to get cars off our roads, reduce pollution and thus global warming. If the government really cares about becoming more 'green' then these should be legalised. No reason not to in my opinion. we need to get this stupid goverment to notice, but i fear they wont due to the revenue they get from fuel. It's crazy!! The same applies to Australia. Get your act together and start saving the planet and embrace the technology that is out there now!! Let's cut down on noise, congestion and pollution. I didn't know segways were ilegal in th UK,I don't own one but don't see why I can't use one instead of using my car on our congested roads. Supporting a friend whose wife has MS and would benefit from one of these. This could make someone's life less dependant on others!! I am physically disabled, such that I cannot walk far or fast, nor can I ride a pedal-cycle. But not so disabled that I need a wheelchair or carriage.
The Carbon footprint of these machines MUST be smaller than anything with an internal combustion engine, so they should be promoted onto our streets not barred from them. These should be legalised immediately to give the option of mobility to those that need them, when alternatives are inappropriate. As a friend of mine suffers from MS, legalising these would lessen the need for her to a)use the car everywhere, and b)lessen the limitations on where she can go as mobility scooters are not always suitable. Having recently ridden Segways in the US, I was all set to buy one of this brilliant machines until I found that they are illegal on public roads/paths. I had assumed, at the very least, that they would have parity with bicycles and hoped for more as they are more akin to pedestrians that cyclists.
UK - - get yourself into the 21st Century - - please ! This would help so many people move around in London and as a result mean less congestion on Public Transport. Have experienced a very short trial on a Segway. Would love to be able to use one. I walk everywhere I possibly can as I do not feel safe or confident on a bicycle on busy roads. The Segway feels safe and secure and very manoeuvrable and would help aid the reduction of traffic on the roads - which is what all councils and subsequently the government - are asking of us. Public transport is generally unreliable and expensive. Time to give the public more choice. Keep up with green technology Mr Brown I have seen, trained and used one of these very versitile machines, if legal I would purchase and use to travel to work and save my car adding to the traffic jams in the centre of Aberdeen. If the powers want to take cars off the road allow me to use this method of transport I think they should be legalised in UK because they are ideal form of transport for commuting and being disabled and unable to walk very far they would keep me mobile. Having had the pleasure of riding a Segway in Spain this year, I cannot see why they can not be licenced for limited use in the UK. I would like to consider this mode of transport to get me to my friends houses without using my car. I am 70 but still very mobile and alert. What a great way to travel short distances - especially for the less able-bodied. If they were legal they would become cheaper and I would certainly use one to travel the three miles to work instead of using my car. When will we move into the 21st century over vehicle licensing and classification. Recently enjoyed a segway tour of Budapest. An excellent and relatively safe method of transport, even on the pavement with walkers. About time it was legalised here! I understand that the Segway runs at approx. 12mph. Their is a lady in my village that has an electrically assisted bike and I can tell you (after following her one-day) she never gets above 12mph on a main road - yet because she has a seat and a set of pedals she's considered legal. Bizarre! I Saw these things in America where they are used by the police amongst others. They are great - and green. I thought our government was supposed to be forward looking - so why are bicycle lanes being kept exclusively for a contraption invented in the 1880s? If this isn't the answer to the politicians prayers of a non-poluting personal transport I don't know what is!! Its madness NOT to allow them on the road. They should be seen as a type of bike. This is needed to clear our roads of cars Had superb fun in Sint Maarten on holiday and now want one in UK These machines take up less room than a powered wheelchair and bridge the gap between those who can walk distances and those who need a wheelchair. I want one! Britian is supposed to be looking at green alternatives and the segway is the ultimate green transport of the future. At this time of concern for the environment, and achieving transport with a smaller carbon footprint, Segway makes a lot more sense than an electric car or moped around town.
as a person with limited mobility i would love to be able to use a segway as a personal transporter. The Segway can be safe green and efficient transportation and should be able to be legally used in the UK roads, pavements and cycle paths in the same category as Cycles and pedestrian controlled aids to mobility. Come on dudes, We want Segways! IF THE GOVERMENT CANNOT IMPROVE THE PUBLIC TRANSPORT COST EFFECTIVELY THEN WHY SHOULDN'T THIS LOW RPM MODE OF TRANSPORT BE LEGAL IF SAY REGISTERD TO A PROPERTY?? This machine should be permitted in the UK. its in use in other countrys and is safe and effective means of transport. the UK invented most forms of transport so why ban some other countries efforts. If they are used properly, Segways can make a huge difference to the carbon footprint we are all making in the way that we use our cars. If they can be used on paths and cyclepaths it will enable people to travel at a cost of 1p a mile instead of anything between 50p to 80p a mile using a car. Significantly, there are no CO2 emissions, less congestion, and less stress. The icing on the cake is that they are a dream to use. Using one is like having your own airport walkway wherever you go - it gets you where you want to go, quickly and safely (and puts a smile on your face at the same time).
I cannot understand why the government are not trying to support being green and eco friendly, its madness. Especially the way the government keep talking and advertising about understanding and reducing our CARBON FOOTPRINT and all.
This is a great device for short journeys and would really help in reducing rush hour congestion - how many cars do you see with only one occupant - just think how much of a saving to the environment it would be if all those people could be driving a segway instead. Why can't I use one for work, its only 3 miles, the car doesn't even get warm and sits in traffic a lot of the time, Typical backward Britain, Government would loose too much fuel duty I suppose The present restriction on use of Segways in England is archaic, onbstructive and ignoring modern technology. It is incredible that the beurocrats can take such an ignorant view as to ban the Segway. These kinds of developments really do offer sensible solutions to some of our pollution problems. If they were worth the money the tax payers pay for them, they would be itching away at the barriers instead of propping them up. As a sufferer of ME, with limited mobility I am keen to see the use of Segways legalised. The Segway seems to be a valid alternative to a mobility scooter and would have no greater impact to other pedestrians than a scooter.
I just used a Segway for the first time in San Francisco and absolutely loved it. It is a great invention and such a great way to get around the city. After 40 minutes of training we were out riding safely on the roads and pavements. I would love to see Segways legalised and feel it makes so sense from an environmental or safety perspective to outlaw them. Wake up its 2007 not 1907. It seems very narrow-minded that Segways are not permitted in the UK as they are in Europe and USA. It is time to re-think and allow them This would be a cool way to solve my getting to work problem let the public use this environmentally machine I have COPD abd am unable to walk far, I use a disabled scooter but cannot take it on a bus or train, hence unable to go on holidays.
To invoke a totally obsolete law to prevent the use of the Segway on OUR pavements is shoddy, lazy and lacklustre legislation. With the Labour government and all the major political parties falling over themselves to parade their so-called "green" credentials it is farcical and baleful for the DfT to behave like overbearing nannies. Legalise the Segway now! A.Pedestrian, Leamington Spa. I have had a go on a Segway whilst I lived in the US, they where so much fun, so much better for travelling short distances then a car, more reliable than buses, take up less space and always put me in a happy mood. These out dated laws should be corrected. I would love to be able to get a segway to commute to work. The route is about 3.4 miles 2.5 ish miles of which has a cycle path off the road through a reserve sort of thing. It can be very frustrating when it takes 20mins sometimes in traffic when you could easily wizz along past it all on something like a segway. I have thought about buying a bike but to be honest I am too lazy to even dream of waking up in the morning and pedal to work. And the idea of arriving and having to change out of your sweaty clothes into work clothes doesnt really appeal. Its safe, its fun, its better for the environment!!! I feel that the current laws enforced from the late 19 hundreds are simply unable to be applied to forms of travel not even imagined when the law was created. Today with traffic congestion and rising fuel costs and the government pushing to go greener it seems incredulous that the government has not addressed these issues arising from the application of modern green technology. The sooner the government catches up with technology the better. About time the UK realised this is the 21 century why ban something that will help the environment...Oh and helps cut down the number of cars. Bring on the Segway and any other solutions like it!! [wish it wasn't so expensive to but though]. It's Time to move out of the "Dark Ages!" Allowing antiquated laws to inhibit sensible technology is sad and disappointing for many people who are trying to maintain mobility yet reduce the impact on the environment. this is ESPECIALLy true for those who are partilly handicapped and wish to avoid the indignity of travelling in a motorized wheelchair when they are still perfectly capable of standing upright (but unable to walk extended distances). Is it possible that some Burocrats who suffer no disability actually envy the handicapped whom are equipped with a Segway?? Hmmm!? It's entirely ridiculous that a government so obsessed with environmentally-friendly solutions will ban what is possibly the single best practical move in that direction. These should be road legal - it is common sense! Legalise Segways for roaad use in the UK I have just come back from Madrid where we did a tour of the city on Segways. They were ideal for getting around and did not get in the way of the pedestrians. This is great tool for getting around and would help reduce our carbon emissions!
We should legalise Segways asap as it provides a clean cheap efficient way of transport esp for shorter journies It is ludicrous that such an environmentally sound device such as the Segway is discriminated against whilst a powered bicycle can be piloted on the public highway with no examination or duty. I am disabled and the Segway gives me back some of my independence. I can go for a walk with my wife other than on pavements for the 1st time in 15 years. To mke this illegal is in my opinion a breach of my human rights. The Segway is extremely easy to use and safe on pavements as it can stop very quickly and can move out of the way of danger quickly as well. The use of Segways in England would also help to reduce the use of cars for short trips. There seems to be a reluctance from the government to accept new technology and this is proved by using a law from 1835 which obviously is not suited for the present. make segways legal,

Absolutely fantastic, what fun and what a way to get around. Better than queueing in traffic jams and alot more practical for getting around. I would definately buy one at some point and agree they need to be legalised as this is definately a way to reduce traffic congestion and alot greener to the environment!!! This country is trying to focus on becoming 'greener', however, when an mode of transport becomes available that people can use to go to the shops a mile down the road, or to get from their house to a local train station, the government will not legalise this. Hence many use cars for these journeys increasing both pollution and congestion.
This is an amazing piece of technology. Surely there must be enough reasons to allow something such as this to help with conjestion and the enviroment issues! legalise segways there fun as well as great for transportation These things are as versatile as a bicycle and even easier to learn to ride! It is crazy to think of anything other than making them 100% legal transport for thousands of people. how can these not be legal? theyare the next way to reduce carbon emmissions and are safe... much better than a bicycle and much safer than a motorbike... legalise them now. With this innovative form of transport we could substantially cut down on carbon emissions. And to make the machine more legal if the government made it mandatory for insurance to be taken out against each machine that would then lessen the problem of any accidents going unrepresented. Segway may not solve every transport problem but they are fun, safe and environmentally friendly. Segways centres should be set up in every town for tourist tours and generally mobility. If this happens the take-up for other purposes would be rapid. I have over 15,000 kms of safe, clean, and incident-free travel on my Segway.
YET AGAIN. Our ridiculous government is nannying us to death, give us the option and let the people decide for once. You never know we might just be grown up enough to make the decision for ourselves. Would it be worth starting a full petition on http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/new ?
Why in the world would this amazing invention be banned from the UK roads and pavements when everywhere else in the world they have recognized the advantages?
why can't england join the europion thinking, and do normal.......let the segway glide in the uk...just like we do in belgium !!!! We need to give all the help we can to disadvantaged people We need to find alternative types of transport that are fun to use. If people enjoy using the segway the roads will be less congested. I have just come back from California where the segway is classed the same as a person. Nobody complains about them on the pavements, infact more people stop you to ask about them and say how cool they are WE have two x2 segways and just about to commit to a volume order of 100 units. They will be legalised. Traffic in London is getting worse by the day as more and more cars are on the road. The Sedgeway would help to relieve some of this pressure and would also be more environmentally friendly. This green machine should be encouraged if it only removed a few cars from our roads this would surly be a benifit this emmisionless transport should be allowed on pavements They're no more dangerous than those things old people drive on the pavement! These are great little vehicles & I would love one. The Segway PT is perfect on pavements, I have seen them in use in Melbourne,Australia during the Commonwealth Games & very easy to control, even in crowds. The highway act of 1835? When I read that, I just had to sign. Even though I live in the USA, where I legally enjoy the freedom of Segway transportation, I feel that Segways should be approved for use worldwide. The Government should be urging us to use this type of transport and stay out of cars, instead of banning them. The should be legalised as soon as possible for use on pavements etc. The goverment want people to leave their cars at home and use some other form of transport, I think that Segway PT should also be made legal and included. The "electronic horse" takes up less room than a car, creates less polution and is the way forward Segways Should Be Allowed *virtually* Anywhere Pedestrians Are Allowed.
segways rule!! Segways could not only create a 'greener' Britain but they could also vastly improve the quality of life for many people with disabilities/mobility problems. Segways are legal to ride in many European countries, and most American states. They should be legal to ride on the pavement in the UK. Segway use is a clear option to reduce congestion and environmental impact of vehicle emissions. In-action is not an option Segway may not be perfect, but a world with Segways is closer to perfection than a world without them. Tink, please. segway is the solution for a genuine moving Segway is fantastic. Segway is a big contribution of technology development. This is a positive breakthrough because its enviromental and users freindly. This technology will lessen the use of engine fuel that contribute to the one of main cause of global warming. I, myself want to purchase one unit of this human transporter or Segway. But because of its expensive price in the market its impossible for me to buy one. I wish that the market price of this human transporter or Segway will be lower before it will legalise to use in the whole world in this coming days. Segway forever and ever ! Scientific research has proven in several studies that Segways are safe (FHWA-HRT-04-103).
Ridiculous, once more the government seeks to harrass those less able, next they will be banning kiddies from using push scooters.
Progressively more & more car's are using our roads. It is an ideal and greener way of traveling from A to B in the appropriate circumstances. It reduces congestion, emissions, and cost. Please let we licenced drivers use these useful and ecologically sound means of transport for short distances. I am registered disabled and do not wish to use a wheelchair - this would be ideal to keep me mobile without becoming trapped by steps! Please legalise segways. I believe they are an excellent alternative transport. Please alow the use of segways as they are better than mobility scooters. I have a friend who is dependend on usuing one to get around. Please allow the Segway to be used on paths and roads. Not only does the Segway have no emissions and is very safe to operate, it can also allow those who have disabilities to be more mobile. NO TO TRANSPORT APARTHEID ! My segway is safe, convienient, cost effective and envionmentally friendly and Illegal because of an outdated law that is no longer applicable in the 21st century. This needs to be addressed now! Milton Keynes is the only city in the UK (as I know of) that has a ready designed labrinth of "Redway" routes across the city which are totally independant of road traffic. These Redways allow free movement of pedestrians, bicyles and electrically powered disabled vehicles to all areas of Milton Keynes without crossing any roads.
Lgalise the SEGWAY in the UK. You know it makes sense. lets segway in the uk Lets see segways legalized in the UK as well as Canada. Lets get them on the road, the pavement issue is going to be much more problematic Keep on rollin' its really backward of us as a nation not to have these PTs legalised what with all the congestion and pollution they are just whats needed. Wake up politicians! IT'S GREAT FOR OUR EASY MOBILITY AND THE NATURE (ZERO EMISSION) It's about time that the UK took notice of what other cleaner more enviromentally friendly countries are doing by way of transport - it is 2006 is it not. it seems beyond stupid, that when every country in the world is waking up to the very real environmental issues facing us, that such a real alternaitve to personal transport such as the segway is being banned. Surely this the sort of thing the government should be endorsing and encouraging. It makes absolute sense to legalise this amazingly advanced peice of mobility equipment.
It is a complete out rage that the Segway is illegal in the uk, its typical for uor MPs to be the odd one out as usual. the segway is a fun, safe alternative mode of transport. alot safer than a bike or a car. I'm proud to be a part of the Segway Campaign and a group of forward thinking people.
I'm furious with the legislation. As a MS sufferer unable to walk more then a few hundred meters, a segeway would give me back my lost ability to move around, both in towns and nature. It's the ultimate mobility device for people who cannot walk but can stand, yet. I'm from Germany and support the legalisation of Segway PTs in all European countries. I'm a Segway owner in a very congested city. Segways are great. Segways are safe. I'm 90 years old and would have no problems sharing the pavement with Segways. They're at least as safe as the electric wheelchairs you see - if not safer. If these help people with mobility problems and quite patently they do they should be allowed. Bicycles which are used by able bodied people, and which are actively encouraged by the powers that be, use the footpath so why not these for those less fortunate than ourselves. They should be allowed. I would love to see Seg's legalised here in the UK. I rode one in San Francisco and had a marvelous time. Just wish they were cheaper! I would join the campaign to legalise Segways in England I was extremely dismayed that (once again) Britain's archaic rules are making us the cavemen of the civilised globe.
I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, mobility was a major problem until I got the Segway XT January 2006. It has changed my life at work and play completely I want to replace my car with something thats less harmful to the environment. Legalise Segway use!! I want to purchase a Segway unit but do not want to break the law. Allowing Segway's to be use by disabled people such as I would greatly benifit and assist my mobility.Used with care, the Segway should be as safe as a cycle and is a green form of travel. My walking limit is 100 yards. My electric scooter is handy, but to big to fit into the boot of my car. Let's be legal. I use my segway as a moblity device, yet it is not accepted as one. it is better for me than my wheelchair....that is why the MAYO clinic (the top hospital in the world)recommends them!!! I use a Segway every day to commute to work I use a Segway as I have quite severe ostoarthritis and this enables me to keep up with my 6 yr old daughter and aids my mobility generally. The alternative is a disability scooter which would have me seated all the time which would not only worsen my arthritic condition but would stigmatise me as disabled.
I think the Segway is an excellent and safe way for people with slight disability to be mobile and retain their independence. It is ridiculous to ban something which is so useful to so many people. i think that the segway is a great idea and should become leagal over in this country the goverment is already trying to make you use public transport or non polluting vehicles so this will be the best way to get around and with fuel emission taxes over the horizon what better way than to use the segway. ( catchy slogan ) ha ha I think it is mad of the government not to allow these. They want us to use greener ways of transport and not to use the roads as much, so we can cut pollution, yet not allowing us to do this, it is in some sense hipocritical. I suffer from a neuro-muscular condition that severely restricts my mobility and i think it is grossly unfair that I am not allowed to use a segway to enhance my ability to attend functions, go shopping, and enjoy life by getting out which I am unable to do now. the restriction imposed on us here in the UK is outdated and short sighted - it needs to be changed immediately. I really great way to protect the environment I operate and own www.madsegs.com in Madrid Spain. The first and largest segway tour operator in the capital, Madrid. I would have prefered to have stayed at home in Edinburgh, Scotland and done this but it was not possible due to the law. I may still be interested in making Edinburgh and the UK better and easier for tourists to see and get around......when the law permits. I live in a very poor transport area of London: No tube, no tram, no train and I never learned to ride a bike. ALL we have are some very unreliable buses. They don't turn up when they should are full of obnoxious school children and take an hour to get 5 miles through the rush hour gridlock. As a single mum I work and travel under stressful time presures. A Segway could be the answer to my prayers. It would get me to the nearest tram stop - from where I could travel much further to work in the time I have available and improve my career prospects no end. I have used a Segway and I think that they are extremly safe. I have found that about 10% of my daily milage is done on a Segway. By my calculations (my car gets 20mpg), after about 100k miles on my car, I'll have NOT purchased 500 gallons of gasoline. I have been interested in Segway for several years: the environmental benefits and the transport freedom it offers should be welcomed in this day and age. I have been on 4 hour tour in Washington DC on a segway so I know what they are like to use. I have a disability that limits my ability to walk but not to stand. I would like to see this device available to the disabled community. I had a 10 minute try out in the US and I'm hooked!!! I find it a worry that out nation can not see the sense in using the segway - they cause no emissions and in an age of getting places fast they would appeal to the younger generation who have little to entice them away from cars - legalise them fast Britain!! I feel that it is impossible to stop something as simple and eco friendly as this when all the other countries in the world adopt such a thing why does England go pace back or in this case 171 years back when everyone else goes one pace forwards. Are we really that shallow or jealous which I feel it is important that the government modernises legislation to encourage alternative forms of transportation, such as the Segway Personal Transporter. I have used them extensively and know them to be safe, quiet, efficient and fun. I'd rather use my Segway to commute, and for short journeys, than my car - especially with congestion being so bad, and petrol prices so high. I doubt I will be able to afford one if they are legalised, but I'll help the cause of those who can and who knows maybe retail competition will drive them into my price range. I can't see why an inovative approach to beat congestion can't be legalised. The Segway is just as safe if not safer than a cycle, even from the pedestrians point of view.
i cannot drive because of my lazy eyes, and walking makes me sweat, finaly theres an answer and now its illegalised. why cant the government make something illegal that actually matters..like racism. i am totally behind legalizing segways. I am totally amazed that the government is using an outdated law to stop the use of the Segway seeing as it has been such a success in France, Spain, Austria, Italy, Netherlands and most of the US. Seeing as we are part of the EU why have we not got the same rights as they. I have been commuting on my Segway to work for a year now and I have no intention of reverting back to my 18 mph car to be stuck in rush hour congestion. I have saved over 50 gallons of fuel since taking delivery of my Segway. If you multiply my saving just by the number of people I know that could commute into the office on a Segway that would start to make a marked difference in the amount of CO2 being emitted. I have received nothing but great feedback from local people, I am courteous to pedestrians and always give them right of way but to be honest the pavements are never busy because everybody is in their cars.
I am invalid person, and the Segway is for the ultimate transportation tool for me. otherwise I have to use my wheelchair for transportation wich is not real fun to ride with(dirt, rain, cold hands in winter of using the wheels, u see nothing in a wheel chair because everyone is bigger, cost al lot of musscle energy, and so on). I am intersted in product design and have been a fan off the segway since it was originally released. A classic design and retro look (sinclair) I am also a segway user here in Portugal I agree with this, amazing invention, definately backing it Hi guys!
Having just riden a segway on a tour in St. Maarten (dutch antilles) my partner and i are keen to buy a segway, however, the illegality is a discouragement. although the official campaign has now ended, i'd like to show my support. great help to travel plans proposed by govt in oredr to reduce traffic congestion and co2 emmisions Goverment needs to move with the times, and support any possible avenue that reduces congestion & polution. Good luck with this.
For a friend with serious problems getting about Excellent idea, wouldn't suit a disabled person like myself, but it would get people off buses and cars for very short trips. Excellent idea Environmentally friendly, great method of transport, quirky - no bother to anyone. What a stupid law. Enjoy traveling. Am for all improvments. E' un prodotto veramente valido e funzionale merita di essere provato e valutato in tutte le sue possibili applicazioni. Don't see any reason why they're not legal! Decades ago the defininition of a moped included a requirement for it to be fitted with pedals by which it could be propelled. That definition was changed and mopeds no longer need to have pedals fitted. Could the current definition of an electrically assisted pedal cycle not be refined in a similar way to encompass the principles of a Segway and similar devices and render it legal to use in public places within the UK? dear goverment,,, wake up and smell the roses not fumes Being in London, recently, I discovered the Congestion Charge aimed at reducing unnecessary traffic pressure and its incidence on the environment. I can't see why a novel brilliant techno-logic idea as the Segway, which pursues the same goals, yet offering users a safe, fun and healthy freedom, suddenly happens to be barred from improving medium-range mobility. Please give the Segway a chance to prove itself. Banning segways is ridiculous. They are no different to disabled carriages. The nanny state is getting ridiculous. At a time when everybody is seeking green solutions, Segway is a fun and green way of travelling. Let's legalise its usage on cycling roads. As a Blue Badge holder due to an arthritic hip I would find a Segway invaluable for shopping trips and general mobility, so that I could join my family on such trips. A Segway takes up less space than existing electric carts that seem to be legal on roads and pavements. all new innovative ideas designed for a greener safer future should have a fair chance to succeed and not be held back by unfair legislation!!! Act NOW! A safe, clean mode of transport A machine with greener credentials does not yet exist..
Members of the police force were selling rides on a Segway, on the pavement outside Exmouth police station for Children in Need. Perhaps I should have done a mass citizens arrest! What a fatuous law. If you would like to leave a comment without signing the petition, please do so via e-mail. |
